Minu's story
Minu is a 53-year-old member of the Akha tribe living in Wawee Village in the hills of Northern Thailand, near the Myanmar border.
Minu is asking for a loan to purchase 800 hens to produce organic free-range eggs for Hilltribe Organics (HTO). HTO is the social enterprise that created the market for organic free-range eggs in Thailand, using organic agriculture to help poor farmers like Minu out of poverty. This will be her first loan with KIVA for her HTO egg farm.
Before Minu started with HTO, she grew conventional vegetables on her family land and was barely able to make ends meet. Caring for her hens and selling their eggs provides Minu and her family with a continuous monthly income and allows her to send her children to school.
Hilltribe Organics was named The Most Sustainable Farming Model in Thailand in 2022 by the Thailand Department of Livestock Development and won the 2022 global Sustainable Food Farming Award from UKNGO Compassion in World Farming.
