Why are you interested in becoming a Trustee?

Rural Action has supported sustainable community ventures in Appalachian Ohio for more than 25 years. We believe small businesses, entrepreneurs, and social entrepreneurs are helping to grow our rural communities and making them better places to live. Through Kiva, we will endorse strong, sustainable businesses in Appalachian Ohio, helping them to access the capital they need to grow. In particular, we plan to support entrepreneurs within the following sectors: sustainable agriculture, sustainable forestry, zero waste, environmental education, watershed restoration, and ecotourism.

What is the mission of your organization?

Our mission is to build a more just economy by developing Appalachian Ohio's assets in environmentally, socially, and economically sustainable ways. Our core work centers on helping small communities do big things, growing local businesses and jobs, restoring our environment, and cultivating the next generation of leaders.

Borrower Due Diligence

How will you decide who to endorse as a borrower? What due diligence will you conduct?

Rural Action endorses loans that meet three requirements. First, the borrower must have an existing working relationship with Rural Action for at least one year (through Rural Action's program work or as a member). Second, the borrower must demonstrate sound financial viability by producing financial statements and a business plan. Finally, potential borrowers will be considered for endorsement by Rural Action's social enterprise committee, made up of experienced business-people and community developers in southeast Ohio.
