Status update - May 1, 2023

Quang Binh Women Development Fund has been unable to fundraise new loans on Kiva since May 2021 because QBWDF could not obtain the approval needed from the regulator to continue the partnership. QBWDF has since been making regular repayments according to a payment plan. Kiva is confident that QBWDF will honor the remaining payments in the plan, and will pass the funds on to lenders as they are received. We thank QBWDF for the years of collaboration and wish them success in their future endeavors.

Quang Binh Women Development Fund (QBWDF) is a social fund that provides households in the Quang Binh province of Vietnam with loans for small businesses and to construct sanitary latrines. Lack of sanitation is a major health concern for the 20-30% of Quang Binh’s population who live well below the poverty line.

QBWDF aims to improve the health standards of these communities by providing loans to women who would otherwise not be able to afford building sanitary latrines in their communities.

A unique lending approach:

QBWDF uses a group lending strategy to provide loans to 10-15 women who are already part of a savings/loan group. Most of these women earn less than $2/day.

QBWDF offers loans depending on the type of latrine needed and the loan is repaid in monthly installments. After dispersing the loans, QBWDF follows up with borrowers to ensure they have used the loans to build and/or update their latrines.

The loans provide funding to women that help cover the cost of materials and labor to construct sanitary latrines. Additionally, QBWDF trains masons to construct the latrines and connects the masons with clients in need. QBWDF has trained at least one mason for every community where the latrines will be built.
