Rosie's story

Hello, my name is Rosario, but everyone calls me Rosie. I am a 33-year-old Native American woman from the Pascua Yaqui Tribe and a proud mother of four children, three girls and one boy. My oldest daughter is about to turn 18 this June, and my son is the youngest.

My journey with crochet began when I was a little girl. My great-grandmother on my mom’s side introduced me to the art, and I found it fascinating. She taught me the basics, and I loved creating things with my hands. Around the same time, in elementary school, I participated in an afterschool arts and crafts program, where crochet was one of the activities. These early experiences shaped my connection to crochet, making it a meaningful part of my life.

Crochet became more than just a hobby, it became a lifeline.

I’ve faced many challenges, including struggling with addiction and experiencing profound losses. Losing my great-grandmother and, later, my father sent me into a downward spiral, and during this time, I lost custody of my children to CPS. It was one of the hardest periods of my life, but crochet helped me cope. Picking up my crochet hook became a calming mechanism, a way to process pain and find a moment of peace.

Through perseverance and self-discovery, I reclaimed my life and regained custody of my children. Crochet played a significant role in that journey, it represented resilience, hope, and the promise of better days.
