Betty's story

Betty is 34 years old and lives in the town of Njeru in the Mukono region of Uganda. She is married and has three children who are all currently in school.

For the past 10 years, Betty has been working hard to manage her retail shop in which she sells general merchandise items like sugar, salt, cooking oil, and soft drinks.

To help expand her business, Betty has requested a loan of 2,000,000 Ugandan Shillings from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to purchase more sacks of sugar, salt, cooking oil, and soft drinks to sell. This will help Betty to generate greater profits and manage to provide enough food for her family. Betty hopes that in the future she will be able to build a house of her own and expand the business more.

She is a member of BRAC's microfinance program that primarily serves small group members like her who do not have collateral for commercial loans but do have businesses that have grown and qualify for microloans.
