Los Claveles Group

Los Claveles Group's story

Priscila, 52-year-old mother of two children who are 10 and 26 years of age, is married to a taxi driver. Her oldest son graduated with a degree in business administration and could not find a job; thus, four years ago, he left the country and immigrated to another one where he found work.

Priscila finished the sixth grade and could not continue because her parents lacked financial resources. Twelve years ago, she started taking custom orders selling chicken and beef. Five years ago, to generate extra income, Priscila started selling potted fruit tree seedlings from her home. Demand is high, so she is requesting her first Kiva loan to buy chicken, beef, and a variety of potted fruit tree seedlings. Her goal is to open an additional business selling new casual clothing.

Priscila joined eight other women to form the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Los Claveles” or “The Carnations”. They live in the department/state of Suchitepequez and participate in the “Microcredit Plus” program of loans, education, and healthcare. They learn about effective business management practices and apply what they learn to their businesses raising animals, preparing food, selling casual clothing, and selling meat and chicken. Other monthly educational themes shared by a facilitator are about health, nutrition, hygiene, women’s issues, and family matters. Every other month, a nurse visits them and offers all kinds of exams, consults, and family planning.
