Encarnacion

Encarnacion's story

The ability for women innovate their businesses is astonishing. Twenty-nine year-old Encarnación has done this. She’s in a relationship with a fisherman and she’s the mother of two children, aged seven and thirteen. They’re both at school in the first and seventh grades respectively. In order to earn her own income, she started a business five years ago in textiles and embroidery, making traditional “huipil” blouses, sash belts and tablecloths. Each month, Encarnación normally makes one “huipil”, five tablecloths and two sash belts. Her sister helps make the traditional clothing.

Encarnación’s very pleased as three years ago she started a second business buying and selling ceramic pots. Both businesses are working well from a place in her home.

Encarnación wants to increase her business stock and so she’s asking Kiva for a loan. With this capital, she’ll buy a variety of coloured yarns and wholesale ceramic pots so she can meet her customer demand.

Encarnación is a very empowered Kaqchikel Mayan woman from the state of Sololá. She is keenly awaiting technical training from the Puente de Amistad’s “Puente al Éxito” programme. Example subjects will be stock management, good customer relations and business studies. They’ll all be useful in making her business a success.

Thank you Kiva lenders for supporting determined women like Encarnación.
