Orquideas Santiago Group's story
Highly-skilled bead artisans, like 37-year-old Maria, create beautiful and colorful beaded coin purses with all kinds of imaginative designs. She takes custom orders and is able to deliver five dozen on a weekly basis! She is single, lives with her parents, and would like to contribute more to household expenses. She requests her first Kiva loan to buy a large quantity of beads in all colors at the wholesale level.
Seven Maya “Tzutujil” women, who live in the department/state of Solola, elected Maria to be the Secretary of their Friendship Bridge Trust Bank, “Orquideas Santiago”. They benefit greatly from monthly educational training--part of the “Microcredit Plus” program of loans, education, and healthcare.
Recent training topics included information about essential business administration practices and how to be an effective entrepreneur. Other topics are drawn from three areas: women’s issues, family matters, and health. Every two months, a traveling nurse offers them all kinds of exams, consults, and family planning.
Maria and her friends appreciate participating in this program, as healthcare is challenging to access and they have little or no formal education. Thank you, Kiva lenders, for learning about Maria and her friends. They appreciate your loan support!
