A loan of $7,000 helps a Chicago-based, Kenya-crafted social enterprise expand into wholesale.
Cera's story
I grew up in rural Kenya, my early childhood spent on my grandmother’s farm. All of this changed when, at the age of nine, our farm was destroyed in the civil war. We became internally displaced and moved to the slums in Nairobi. Our whole family was crammed in a small one-room home, much of our daily struggles correlated with lack of resources and opportunities. And it was that experience, and the ensuing years, that put me on a path to lift up poor communities.
I had the opportunity to study international development and entrepreneurship at UCLA, where I focused on using entrepreneurship as a way to alleviate poverty in my community. I opened a workshop in Nairobi, where we make beautiful bags and leather goods. Ecodunia is about creating great bags that do good by giving opportunities to lift people out of poverty.
And we offer consumers a way to play a part in creating a more inclusive economy and making the world a better place by using their spending power in a way that is responsible, ethical and sustainable.
