Tawan

Tawan's story

Tawan, from a rural village in Northern Thailand, has navigated various careers, from being a volunteer teacher in the late 70s to returning to the fields like many of his generation. Despite his 9th-grade education, which was considered well-educated for his age, Tawan found that teaching did not fulfill his expectations and soon turned to traditional farming for a living. Then, as traditional farming methods became unsustainable due to environmental degradation and land scarcity, Tawan, alongside his wife, discovered hammock weaving. This new venture has proven to be the most stable and rewarding source of income he has ever had, significantly enhancing his quality of life away from the hazardous conditions of slash-and-burn agriculture.

Hammock weaving not only offers Tawan a safer work environment but also a sustainable income to support his family's needs. Now, fully committed to his artisan craft, Tawan is seeking a Kiva loan to purchase necessary weaving supplies and yarn. This investment will allow him to continue producing hammocks consistently throughout the year, further stabilizing his financial situation.

By supporting his loan, you are helping Tawan secure a stable and prosperous future, leveraging his skills in a craft that has transformed his life and that of his family.
