Carmen is a housewife who started her business selling snacks, pastries and hallacas from the terrace of her home. Her main motivation for the business was a situation she was facing with her significant other and in order to have her own income and care for her children. She opened the business and is very committed and dedicated. Over time she decided it would be best to set up a kiosk on a main street where she could expand her product line. She was there for a time, but later she travelled to the city of Bogotá, and when she returned two years later, she started the same business again. Every day, starting at 5 in the morning, Carmen opens the doors of her business and offers snacks made from corn, such as egg arepas, empanadas, stuffed potatoes, patacones as well as hallacas and pork and chicken pastries. Right now, she is applying for her first Kiva loan through Fundación Mario Santo Domingo, in order to buy a grill, a fryer and produce to make the food. With this investment, she thinks she will improve her sales and expand her product line. Her goal in the future is to have a business as prosperous as she had in previous years, so that she can achieve her personal goal of building two apartments in her home and rent them out.
