Maria (the first woman on the right side of the photograph) is one of the few women who strive and support their family to get ahead. She is 60 years old, is single, and has four children between the ages of 12 and 26 years. This humble family lives in a community of the Xojola village. In spite of her advanced age, Maria makes a living by growing and selling coffee and has done so for the last 20 years. This work is very important to her, as it is where her income comes from.
Because she is one of the women with the most leadership in her community, a group of women chose her to be the representative of a group that is asking for a loan. She will invest her share in buying agricultural supplies to maintain coffee. Maria and her group have put their hope in this loan so that each of them will be able to meet her expenses. This woman's great dream is for her coffee crop to increase in order to improve her family's living conditions.
