A loan helped to invest in a 10 m3 Sistema Biobolsa biodigester.

Cecilia's story

Cecilia owns cows, sheep and poultry. She dedicates herself to selling her cows' milk and cultivates corn and kidney beans on a field close to her house. She decided to purchase a biodigester in order to reduce her operating costs and have more money available to expand her farm. Indeed, she used to buy expensive LP gas and chemical fertilizers while she was cooking with wood she collected in the surroundings. At the same time, she piled up her animals' waste outside the farm, where it was emitting greenhouse gases and contaminating underground water sources.

Her biodigester will allow Cecilia to treat her animals' manure, produce renewable energy (biogas) to cook and heat water in the house, while also generating nutrient-rich organic fertilizer to increase the yield of her field in a sustainable way. As she displaces fossil fuels from her farm's operations and eliminates the toxic smoke of burning wood from her house, her and her family's quality of life will drastically improve. Cecilia plans to invest her savings in buying additional cows to increase her milk production and generate additional income for the household.

This loan represents 20% of the total cost of the biodigester, the remaining part being covered by a government subsidy.
