Maria Jesus's story

María is a 40-year-old single mother of four children. She lives with them in a village in the municipality of Mezapa, Atlántida, near the town of Yoro. María started selling clothes such as blouses, pants, children's clothing, shirts, underwear and dresses. She was selling this merchandise as a street vendor 2 and 1/2 years ago, and as the business grew, decided to establish a grocery store where she sells food products such as rice, sugar, butter, eggs, soda, bread, churros (doughnuts), juices, etc. She still sells clothes, school supplies, and some cosmetics together with running her grocery store. María is taking her second loan with the institution, which is for 20,000 lempiras. With this money, she will buy notebooks, backpacks, pencils, crayons, and more food products including soft drinks, (doughnuts), sugar, beans, flour, eggs and milk, in addition to more clothing to sell. Her plan is to grow the business and to continue moving upward, together with her children.
