A loan helped a member to invest in a brick manufacturing unit.

Chameli Mahila Samuha Group's story

The Self-Help Group of “Chameli Mahila Samuha” is being led by Mejun (the lady who is standing with her hand raised). It comprises distinctive and hardworking women members who hail from Josidih, a small village in the Deoghar district of Jharkhand. These members, who run various small businesses, have collectively approached MESP (Micrograam’s field partner) for a loan of INR 50,000.

Mejun’s husband does brick manufacturing; initially, Mejun and her husband were both working as helpers in a brick manufacturing unit, then recently her husband started his own business. Mejun has two sons. Her younger son is helping his father and the elder son is working under a cement factory as a daily wage laborer.

The family income is not sufficient to meet the family expenses, so Mejun planned to take a loan from Kiva to invest in her husband’s business, which will help her to increase her family's monthly income. The rest of the members need the amount to improve their livelihoods. All of these members have been running their own businesses for a long time now. The loan that they have asked for will help them in increasing their family incomes, and will also help them in planning a better future for their children. This will help them save their income and gear themselves up in case of emergencies. If the assistance they asked for is provided to them, it surely will change their lives. They will repay the loan in a stipulated time frame on a repayment schedule.

In this group: Mejun, Jahidon, Jamila, Ravina, Vinava
