A loan helped to grow her mobile money transfer business by increasing her daily float to facilitate bigger payments.

Mwila's story

Mwila is 26 years old. She is hardworking, cheerful and generous. She currently operates two Zoona mobile money transfer outlets, providing financial services to people in Chipata and Nyimba. Mwila lives with her mother and has the responsibility of supporting her as well as her four siblings.

Mwila has been running her mobile money transfer business for two years. She has seen her business grow and is very happy with the progress. This is Mwila’s third loan from Kiva. The first loan she got helped her set up her business. She was able to pay for all her set-up costs and quickly start transacting. She has successfully repaid this loan.

Mwila then got a second loan to help her open her second outlet in a small town called Nyimba. With this loan, she was able to purchase a trading booth that she uses to serve her customers who need to send and receive money from her Nyimba outlet.

Despite her business doing well, Mwila has some day-to-day challenges that she encounters. She sometimes lacks adequate float to sustain huge money transfer transactions. This then results in fewer commissions being earned. She has also wanted to grow her business by opening up more outlets within the region, but due to lack of capital, this has not yet materialized.

Mwila hopes that once she gets the Kiva loan, she will be able to increase her daily float to facilitate bigger payments as well as expand her business by opening up more outlets to reach out to distant communities. This will increase her revenue and help Mwila support her family financially, as it is one of her responsibilities. She is optimistic that very soon she will be able to provide adequate upkeep for her family.
