A loan helped to connect to Haiti's first solar hybrid smart electricity grid.

Bertony's story

This loan helps Bertony get connected to his local prepaid microgrid.

Bertony lives in the town of Les Anglais in southern Haiti. His blue and yellow house has no reliable access to electricity; thus Bertony is forced to use costly and harmful kerosene for lighting. A solar-powered microgrid is being installed in Les Anglais, giving Bertony the opportunity to connect to a higher quality, lower cost energy source. He is looking forward to getting better lighting at night.

Bertony is seeking a loan from Kiva lenders to cover the upfront cost of connecting to the grid, which he will repay through his payments for electricity.

An electrical connection dramatically reduces the cost of lighting in towns such as Les Anglais while offering far superior light quality and, more generally, providing opportunities for people to dramatically improve their quality of life.
