In the Purépecha language ‘Shunhunda’ means resin. This is the name of a group of people who collect resin in the indigenous community of Cherán. This community is in the heart of the Tarasca mountains, the home of the Purepecha indigenous people in the state of Michoacán, Mexico.
Josué is the representative of this group, and he is also part of the advisory council. Josué is married, and his wife works as a professional. They have two children; Josué Felipe, age 13; and Julieta Jatsiri, age 2.
Josué points out that the resin collector is the primary forest ranger. The business of collecting resin has directly impacted him his entire life. This makes him feel very proud that he is teaching and making his countrymen aware of the sustainability of working the forest.
His plan for the future is for the indigenous community of Cherán to have an industry where they can produce resin derivatives. This has become one of his biggest dreams. In other words, he wants to manage to have an industry in the community where the people know how to take advantage of it, value it, and manage the forest resources.
He knows that there are people around the world who are ready to help the indigenous people in their forest project. This makes his group feel committed to deliver good results. He would like to say thanks for your effort to all of those that are helping the indigenous community. They are getting out of a financial downturn and meeting the needs of the forest.
In addition to being a business, resin extraction has helped preserve the atmosphere in a positive and cultural way. The trade of resin extraction is highly valued in the village. He feels that one of their biggest challenges is changing the way of looking at the business activity of extracting resin.
All group members will use their loans to plant resin producing pine trees. Collectively, Shunhanda group will plant 55,000 pine trees.
