A loan helped to hire more carvers and to purchase wood.

Eka's story

Eka is a Balinese artisan who specializes in wood carvings. She would like to hire more carvers to work at her workshop and invest in a bulk purchase of wood.

Eka has been selling through NOVICA since 2010. This is her story:

"Unfortunately, my husband passed away in 2009 after a long illness, leaving me with a three-year-old daughter and a 10-day-old son. I decided to honor his memory by continuing carving as he did, something I learned from my father at a very young age. Dad would carve and my mother, brothers and I would finish the pieces. We worked this way until I married. My husband liked to carve coconut shells, and we enjoyed developing new styles and designs together, then I would make the samples. Now that I'm the sole provider for my children, I continue to carve coconut shells, and I also carve statuettes from wood. My children are my biggest motivation to work. I always keep my spirit up and go on strong for my children. Thanks to them. I do not falter, and thanks to all of you for always supporting me and for encouraging me to develop new ideas and designs for sculptures so they will always be liked."

"This microcredit will help me prepare new items in time for the holiday season. I need capital to help me produce the large quantity of items needed. I have received loans in the past, and it helped me a lot. Thanks much to you who support me with this loan."
