A loan helped a member to purchase clothing.

Arabani Group's story

Married in polygamous families only, the four members of the group Arabani average 43 years of age and four children each. The women all live in Badialan III, a district in Bamako. And they know one another through ties of community and their revenue-generating businesses in Badialan III. The group members have small-scale businesses involving clothing, that is, Wax ’pagnes’ (the colorful cloth of western Africa) of the best quality; onions; and charcoal.

With the goal of increasing their business capital, the group members decided to collaborate with the microfinance institution Soro Yiriwaso and are now on their third solidarity loan cycle.

Ms. Assétou (the woman standing at the far right in the photo) is a major vendor of the best-quality clothing (Wax ‘pagne’ cloth). She intends to use her loan to purchase 35 lengths wholesale in Bamako. Her sales are made retail to a customer base composed mostly of women in Badialan III.

With this loan, Ms. Assétou hopes to make an average monthly profit of 50,000 francs CFA that will be used for reinvesting in her business and meeting sundry needs at home.
