Kiva loans are facilitated through 2 models, partner and direct, that enable us to reach the greatest number of people around the world.
For partner loans, borrowers apply to a local Lending Partner, which manages the loan on the ground. Lending Partners are responsible for screening borrowers, disbursing loans, posting borrowers to the Kiva website for funding, collecting repayments and otherwise administering Kiva loans on the ground to borrowers.
For direct loans, borrowers apply through the Kiva website and may or may not be endorsed by a Trustee. Unlike Lending Partners, Trustees don't handle any financial transactions or have any duty to repay loans on behalf of their borrowers. Instead, Trustees take the role of providing support and business advice to their borrowers throughout the term of the loan.
Plasdah is a 24-year-old businesswoman. She is married with one child and resides in the Kwekwe District, Zimbabwe together with her family. Eleven months ago, after realizing the importance of being financially independent, Plasdah ventured into a poultry project where she has had the capacity to produce batches of 50 broiler birds every six weeks. She volunteers with other Cama members in her community in doing awareness campaigns on the importance of education, children’s rights, and on HIV and AIDS. Cama is Camfed’s alumnae network of women. With the requested loan, she intends to expand her poultry production to 50 broiler birds per week to meet the demand of chicken in her area and therefore get more profits to improve the quality of life for her family.

The Campaign for Female Education (Camfed) is an international nonprofit organization operating in five countries in Africa that focuses on eradicating poverty in rural Africa by investing in education for girls and supporting the economic self-reliance and leadership of young women. Camfed provides support for the long-term, working with individuals from primary to high school, and through the Cama empowerment and community outreach group.
Kiva lenders? funds are used to link women living in rural Zimbabwe to the capital they need to expand their businesses, support their families and contribute to their communities.
Loans associated with this partner may carry a higher level of risk due to the macroeconomic situation in Zimbabwe. The Zimbabwean government released a bond note at a stated rate equivalent to 1 USD. However, the bond isn't trading at this rate in Zimbabwe and hence there's a risk of hyperinflation in the market. While borrowers may be affected by this macroeconomic risk, this partner is working to help mitigate risks by lending in USD and transacting with its borrowers electronically using mobile money.
