A loan helped to purchase paddy seeds, fertilizers and pesticides to cultivate paddy.

Alema's story

Alema, a very young woman of only 27 years, lives with her husband and their two school-going children (one son and one daughter) in the small village of Vemtiya in the district of Jalpaiguri in a humble home. She and her husband both have a primary education. Their children are in different grades of primary school.

Alema's husband Yabuk, 39 years old, works as a farmer in the village to earn an income for the family's household. He has cultivatable paddy fields where he grows paddy. He has been engaged in agricultural activities for many years. Although Alema is a housewife who manages the household and looks after her husband and children, she helps her husband a lot. They sell the produce in the local markets. The major part of their locality is covered with agricultural land and paddy is cultivated widely in the region. So, they have to face competitors in the market. The income generated from this cultivation is insufficient to support the family.

Alema wants to increase the productivity. For this reason, she is seeking a loan from BJS (Kiva's partner). She will use the loan to buy better quality seeds, fertilizers and insecticides for a good quality product. She hopes the loan will enable her to earn additional income to provide a better education to her children and build a better, decent house for them.

She is thankful for BJS and Kiva.
