A loan helped to buy fertilizers and seeds for paddy cultivation.

Kabita Rani's story

Agriculture has been a prime source of livelihood in India for close to 60% of the population. India has one of the world’s largest productions of paddy crops in the world. Sometimes the marginalized people have land to grow but due to financial constraints, are not able to buy fertilizers, seeds, and irrigation facilities.

Kabita belongs to Kailashpur village in the South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal. Her husband usually goes out of the village in search of work. The current household income is not sufficient and with the daunting responsibilities that she will face in the future to finance their education, it is imperative that she exploits the land for paddy cultivation.

As a member of Parjit Self Help Group (SHG), Kabita is seeking a loan of INR 20,000 for her paddy cultivation. She will use the loan to buy fertilizers, seeds etc. She expects to reap a profit of INR 50,000 per year. With her finances in place, she can expect to bring stability to her family.
