A loan helped a member to buy raw materials to make soap.

Djantoyerela Group's story

The members of Djantoyerèla Group average 29 years of age and three children. Most of them are married in monogamous household. They all live in Ouenzindougou and got to know each other through bonds of kinship, friendship, and community.

Most of the members are making soap. In order to bolster their working capital, the members of the group decided to work with Kiva's partner, Soro Yiriwaso, from which they are seeking their first solidarity loan (group loan).

Mrs. Sitan is the woman sitting on the right in the photograph. She's very renowned as a maker and seller of soaps. She intends to use her loan to buy raw materials wholesale at the market. She will buy one barrel of acid paste, 50 kg of potash, and 50 kg of shea butter.

To make soap, one has to mix the acid paste with the potash and shea butter and churn the mix for several hours, until the paste gets thick. The paste is left to get harder in molds designed for this purpose. Then it is cut into pieces ready to be sold.

The soaps are sold at the market and door-to-door, to a mixed-gender clientele. With this loan, Mrs. Sitan hopes to turn an average monthly profit of XOF 50'000 (ca US$ 105), to be reinvested in her business.
