Saraswati is the leader of a group that hails from M. Rampur village of Kalahandi district of Odisha, India. She is a married woman of 29 years of age. The member standing third from the left in the front line with raised hand is Saraswati. She has done vegetable vending with the help of her husband for the last four years. Saraswati has a family of three members consisting of her husband and a daughter about four years old. Saraswati, along with eleven other members from her village formed a self-help group and applied for a loan from Mahashakti Foundation for expansion of their existing business. It is the first time the group will take a loan from MSF.
Out of their small income they are maintaining their family in a low profile. At present the monthly income of Saraswati is Rs.5,000 but still it is not sufficient to cater for the needs of her family. After learning the business procedure and such, she wants to increase the volume of her business. Now she wants a loan to purchase vegetables like brinjal, tomatoes, green chili, curly flower, bananas, drum sticks, cucumbers, pumpkins, etc. In future she wants to establish herself as a wholesaler of vegetables in her locality.
The other 11 members of the group are Jasoda, Kantilata, Surya, Kumudini, Sabita, Tripura, Sashmita, jhunu, Sanjukta, Aruni and Kumari and they also want a loan for the development of their existing businesses such as betel shop, puffed rice, salon, fruit shop, seasonal business and vegetable vending.
