Chabibala's story

Chabibala is a sociable woman. She is 40 years old, married and has children. She lives with her husband and children in the small village of Magurmari in the district of Jalpaiguri. His husband is 50 years old. Chabibala and her husband both are uneducated and can only sign their names. Their son is a mason and their daughter is in ninth standard (Grade 9). They have a semi-pacca house (brick-built walls and a straw roof).

Chabibala 's husband is a cycle-van puller and earns money by carrying people and goods. Chabibala is also very hardworking and enthusiastic. She is engaged in a business of making " Bidi"( a handmade cigarette, made by rural women and used in rural regions). She puts in hard labour after managing her household work. By doing this she wants to earn additional income to overcome the financial hurdles of the family. Now she thought to start a new business of cultivating potatoes in their own land, but she lacks immediate financial resources.

Chabibala learned that Kiva’s partner, BJS, gives loans to rural women to start new businesses. She has taken a loan to buy potato seeds and fertilizers to start cultivation of potatoes. She hopes to earn a profit as it is a lucrative business. She will sell potatoes in the local market, which will be an important source of income for the family.

Her dream is to run the agricultural business in a sustainable way. Chabibala and her family will be grateful to BJS and Kiva for their help in providing the amount they need to start the business.
