A loan helped to buy a truck for transporting milk.

Dukundamatungo Dairy Co-Op's story

Patrick is 76 years old and the leader of the Dukundamatungo Dairy Co-op, which is now 170 members strong. This loan will benefit the entire co-op, which offers many services beyond selling milk, including veterinary care and an animal pharmacy.

Recent truck problems have slowed their activities, and it's prohibitively expensive to hire smaller cars twice a day to transport milk from the collection center to the industry. Dukundamatungo Dairy Co-op has requested this loan to buy a truck that can handle transporting the increased milk production to the industry and ultimately reduce the co-op's overhead costs. With profits from selling milk, they will reinvest in their businesses by buying coolers and restocking their animal pharmacy.

Around 90% of the Rwandan population is involved in subsistence agriculture, but many individuals have a difficult time generating money in this way without access to markets. Additionally, the income that comes from accessing markets is often the only way to pay for things like education and healthcare. Put simply, this truck allows the Dukundamatungo Dairy Co-op to turn their milk into cash, support their co-op, and better the lives of all 170 members.
