The seven members of the Danaya group are married women who are on average 39 years old with an average of 4 children each. They mostly live in polygamous families in Mancourani I, one of the popular neighborhoods in the city of Sikasso, in the 3rd administrative region of Mali. They are on their fifteenth loan with the microfinance organization Soro Yiriwaso in order to better meet the needs of their customers. Their previous loans have been fully repaid.
Sali is pictured seated in the middle of the photo. She is in the orange business in the Danaya group. She plans to use her loan to purchase fruits - oranges, papayas, pineapple, and grapes. She resells them for cash and for credit to a customer base made up of both men and women. She stocks up in the villages surrounding Sikasso and often in the big market in town. Sali hopes to earn an average monthly profit of 57,500 francs CFA, a portion of which she will use to repay the loan and the rest she will put into savings.
