A loan helped a member to purchase fertilizer and seeds.

Dantiande 1 Group's story

The members of the group "DANTIANDE 1" are all married women, who average 49 years of age and seven children each, all living in polygamous families in Bandiagara, in the 5th administrative region of the Republic of Mali. Bandiagara as a town is 90% cliffs. There, the women's main work involves growing onions and processing them. The women transport arable earth uphill to make planting beds for their farm work.

They are collaborating with the microfinance institution Soro Yiriwaso to carry out their market garden work as the rainy season ends. They are on their first loan with the institution.

The crop grown is essentially onions, as is the case with Fatouma S, who is sitting first from the right in the photo. With her loan, she intends to purchase some seeds and fertilizer. After the harvest, the produce is sold to men and women customers in the village and in Bandiagara.

She plans on making a profit of 21,000 francs CFA at the end of the planting effort. This profit will allow her to help out her husband in covering family expenses, to purchase small ruminants and poultry, and to invest the rest in her work.
