A loan helped to improve and expand her shop, purchase more goods for retail, and to buy a generator.

Baneen's story

Banen is only 19 years old and since 2009 has been working. She lives and works in one of the south governorates of Iraq.

With limited career options due to cultural restrictions and domestic constraints, Banen started like just like many other Iraqi women working from home, using their sewing skills to generate some income and participate in meeting the financial needs of the family. But Banen was able to take her skills and plans to a higher level and now she owns and works in her own small business.

A true entrepreneur mind, Banen is focusing on bridal gowns and special occasion dresses in her shop. And with her passion and drive as well as with the potential for her business to grow she qualifies to participate in the WLIFT program. The SME loan she is taking from Relief International Microfinance Iraq will provide her with the capital needed to improve and expand her shop, purchase more goods for retail, and to buy a generator as well as an air conditioning unit - as electricity in her area is provided for just a couple of hours a day, as such having her own power supply will improve her work conditions, and A/C will ease the effects of the daily heat for her and her customers as they come for shopping and fittings.
