Uma Devi Group's story

The name of this Joint Liability Group is Uma Devi, located at Khariar town of Nuapada district of Odisha, India. This group was formed in the year 2009 comprising four active and able women. Amanti is one of the members of this group who is standing second from the right with raised hand in the photo. She is a very confident lady and possesses a strong determination for the development of her family. She is 37 years old; living with her husband, two daughters of 16 and 14 years and a son of 10 years old in her small village named Khudpej which is seven miles away from Khariar town.

Amanti is running a tailoring center in her house with one sewing machine where she takes orders for stitching ladies' garments. Her husband has also been running an established tailoring center called Star Tailors at Khariar town for last ten years. He has engaged five workers for stitching. He is very popular for stitching of gents garments. Amanti and her husband earn a monthly income of 8,000 INR from the two businesses, which hardly allows them to manage both the family and educational expenses of the children. So they are planning to expand the business at Khariar to earn some extra income. This is the fifth loan for Amanti and from this loan she wants to purchase another machine and pants and shirts pieces for selling. She is very hopeful that this investment will help her. She hopes to give better education to her children.

The other three members of this group are Rekha, Jashu and Sima, running a tiffin center, a general store and a fruit stall respectively.
