A loan helped to buy organic fertilizer.

Maria's story

María, 54, is a hardworking woman. She lives with her husband, Juan, and their four children, only two of whom live with them in their rented house.

For the past six years María has dedicated her time and effort to improving her economic situation. She and her husband earn their living farming and raising livestock. On their own land they grow potatoes, corn, and beans, which they painstakingly fertilize, look after, and harvest because they know they'll be rewarded when they sell their products at the city market. María says that she herself transports the produce to be sold. "I have to make the most of the sale and fetch the best price," she says. She also raises animals including pigs and sheep, which she fattens up so she can sell the meat later on. Thanks to her business, María brings in a steady income to keep up with household expenses. Now she wants to increase her working capital so she can have higher profits.

This is her third Kiva loan, and during all this time she has managed to advance herself in her business and bring in money for her children's futures, so she promises to be punctual with her payments. María will invest the 4000 soles in organic fertilizer for the next harvest.
