A loan helped to pay for start-up costs and lumber purchases and to cover the costs of a specialty woodworking course.

Charley's story

As a teenager, Charley watched, learned and helped his father, who was a carpenter, build homes. A Vietnam and Desert Storm veteran who retired from the military in 2004, Charley taught in the Houston school district when he returned home and soon after began working for large construction companies and as an independent contractor.

Charley later moved to Dallas to continue to serve his country, working for L-3, a company that works to enhance government intelligence and security. Charley works overnight specifically with black boxes, which hold recorded information about airplane performance parameters. During the day, Charley continues what he learned from his father as a carpenter creating wooden furniture to sell. He plans on using the funds to help him with start-up costs, lumber purchases and to cover the costs of a specialty woodworking course.

Before getting a loan from Accion Texas Inc., Charley had already invested more than $1,500 for a banner, tools and equipment that he needs for his business, and he has secured a site to sell at the First Monday Market Place in Canton, Texas. To improve the amount of items he has to offer, Charley is using his loan to take that specialty class with his wife, who will cover the stand while he is working. The class will also provide Charley and his wife with additional equipment and wood to jumpstart his business.
