Alakara Group's story

Jane’s group has 14 farmers and is located in Teso District. Jane is pictured on the right of Alakara Group with her hand raised. Jane is pictured amongst the 5 men and 9 women in her group. She will receive input loans capable of planting ½ an acre with sorghum, sweet potato and millet. Jane first enrolled with One Acre Fund during the 2011 Long Rains and is now preparing to be a One Acre Fund farmer during the 2013 Long Rains season. Jane joined One Acre Fund in order to grow enough food for the family and to access the best input prices.

Jane reports that before One Acre Fund, she was able to grow about 3 bags of maize per ½ acre, but with her One Acre Fund input loan during Long Rains 2012, she harvested 9 bags per 1/2 acre! She plans to use the money that she earns from her next harvest to send her children to school and perhaps invest in another business. For the 2013 Long Rains season, Jane’s group members will take input loans of ½ acre each. In total, this group will receive input loans for use on 7 acres of land.
