A loan helped to pay for 10 low-cost LED lights to resell to rural households without electricity.


Elias's story

Elias is a 40-year-old man from Kayonza District in the Eastern Province of Rwanda. He is seeking a loan of $50 to purchase 10 rechargeable LED lights, which he will resell to people without electricity in his village. Every week or so, these customers will return to him to have their lights recharged for just $0.20. Elias started selling lights in March, 2012, and he has sold 80 lights to date, providing clean energy to 400 people. He is also a shopkeeper and will reinvest the money he makes into expanding his other business to earn more money for himself and his wife.
