A loan helped to buy fertilizers, seeds, and agricultural technologies to increase maize yields.

Leatu's story

Leatu, 50, lives in Kwatau village with her seven children who she hopes will one day be succesful farmers and encourage others not only in the community but in all of Kaduna state, to see farming and the agricultural sector as a viable career opportunity. Before Babban Gona, Leatu was unable to access most types of seeds due to lack of funds. However, by receiving a Babban Gona loan, Leatu has the opportunity to access high quality hybrid seeds that are guaranteed to increase her yields. A Babban Gona loan will provide Leatu with high-quality seeds as well as fertilizers and technologies to eliminate the toxins from her maize. In addition, a Babban Gona loan will allow Leatu the means to store her crops as well as the ability to sell them at a premium market price. As a Babban Gona member, Leatu has the opportunity to reap yields three times as high as the national average and earn at least three times as much as the average Nigerian farmer. She is excited about the profits she will earn this year from reaping a large quantity of high quality maize.

Leatu has big plans for the future; with her Babban Gona profits and new found knowledge on the importance of seed selection, which she acquired through Babban Gona, she wants to open a seed store where she can sell high-quality seeds to other farmers in her village. She plans to run this business during the dry season to supplement her income. Leatu takes pride in her work as a farmer and being a member of Babban Gona has renewed her love for working on her land. Now she hopes to see her older children become members of Babban Gona and her younger children take advantage of the added income and health effects of toxin free maize to focus on their education before becoming involved in the family business.
