Phelesia is a member of Bulala Group, in Kakamega South District. She is pictured with her group -- 17 One Acre Fund farmers, 15 women and 2 men. Phelesia is standing on the right, with her hand raised. She is receiving an input loan for ½ acre of maize, millet, and sorghum cultivation. Phelesia joined One Acre Fund during the Long Rains 2012, and is now enrolling in the Long Rains 2013 season. Phelesia joined One Acre Fund so that she could grow enough food for the family.
Phelesia reports that before One Acre Fund, she was able to grow about two bags of maize per ½ acre, but with her One Acre Fund input loan during Long Rains 2012, she harvested six bags per 1/2 acre! She plans to use the money that she earns from her next harvest to send her children to school and to help in paying household bills. For the 2013 Long Rains season, the Bulala Group members will take input loans of ½ acre, each. In total, this group will receive input loans for use on 8.5 acres of land.
