Maria is a member who has been receiving loans through her communal bank for 3 years. She has belonged to other communal banks where she has formed grand friendships and now, she is associated with Las Gaviotas (The Seagulls) communal bank. She lives on the outskirts of Banos (Baths) parish, some 8 kilometers west of Cuenca, or 15 minutes from the city's historical center. The curative properties of the thermal springs that emerge from the adjacent mountains have allowed Banos to prosper as a tourist center. Its also known for its gastronomy and its various places to enjoy nature. the local people are kind and warm hearted, and they maintain the culture and traditions of their towns.
Maria is 47 years old and single with no children. She lives with her mother whom she cares for due to advanced age. The house they live in belongs to her mother.
Maria works daily selling grains, vegetables, and garden produce in the streets. She lacks a stall of her own where she could sell her products. Maria has done this for some 20 years.
Her new loan will be invested in purchasing vegetables and garden produce to continue her business.
Maria's goal is to have her own stall where she can sell her products in a better manner.
