Chanthou is a 37-year-old divorced woman living in a rural area in Kandal province’s Kandal Stoeng district, Cambodia. She has three children (two daughters and one son); two of them are dependent on her and still in school while the other works at a garment factory. For several years, she has struggled to feed her children by farming rice on seven hectares of farmland. However, a lack of capital to support her business is still her main challenge.
Chanthou’s group consists of four members who live in the same village. Chanthou has been with VisionFund for two cycles while her group members have been with them from two to five cycles. She completely paid back her previous loans, which have helped her to improve her living. Currently, she is able to earn KHR 29,700 per day from her business. Chanthou is leading the group to apply for a loan of KHR 1,000,000 apiece. She will use her portion to buy fertilizers and rice seeds for her farmland and to purchase gasoline. She hopes that this loan will enable her to increase her income so she can improve her living conditions and keep her children in school.
