A loan helped to buy and insure a dairy cow.

Janneth's story

Janneth is a farmer in Kitale, Western Kenya, and the mother of seven children, five of whom are adults. She has been farming for twenty years and currently runs her farm with the help of one farmhand. Janneth sells her produce, comprised mainly of maize, milk and horticultural products, to the local market. She also runs a secondhand clothes retail business and a cereal milling plant.

Janneth has requested a loan of 52,000 KES from Juhudi Kilimo to buy and insure a dairy cow. She is optimistic that her businesses will pay with better returns and assist her in paying for the education of her two children still in school. Janneth says the major challenge occurs during high production seasons; however, this is not a major challenge for milk production though it is acute for farmers producing only cereals such as maize.
