A loan helped to buy a van to transport electronics to the flea market.

Joel's story

For many years, Joel made a living by selling crafts in Mexico, so when he moved to California he continued to rely on his entrepreneurial spirit. Joel started a new business, Joel’s Varios, where he sells an array of electronics.

“Joel’s Varios” earned a spot in Fruitvale’s bustling flea market, in a sea of very small business owners offering everything from hair adornments to licorice. “It’s great being my own boss. Sometimes it’s hard, but it’s worth it,” Joel says. Several days a week, Joel offers a warm hello to passersby as he stands behind his electronics booth. A talented and driven salesman, Joel shares anecdotes about the gadgets with his customers as they pick through the large quantity of cameras, phones and radios he offers.

But as Joel’s business expands, he needs to be able to expedite the process of transferring the electronics from his house to the flea market. With a loan of $7,500, he will purchase a van that will allow him to buy more electronics so that he can carry an even larger inventory, allowing him to earn greater profits.
