A loan helped to purchase poultry and to grow nappier grass for feeding her dairy cows.

Chepkirui's story

Chepkirui, age 33, earns a living through two businesses: tailoring and farming. She has been active in farming for the past seven years, and her farm produces tea and milk. She and her husband live in Litein South Rift, Kenya, with their four children, who are aged between 10 and 14. The three older children are enrolled in school.

Chepkirui has requested a loan in the amount of 50,000 KES. With the loan funds, she will use KES 30,000 to purchase birds for a poultry farming venture, and use KES 20,000 to plant nappier grass and to pay farmhands to till and weed it. The nappier grass feeds her dairy cows, and she will also sell it to local dairy farmers. She says scarcity of animal feed has made nappier grass marketable and the income will help her meet her family's basic needs.

Chepkirui says that inadequacy of farming skills is the main challenge to farmers.
