The ten members of Benkadi 5 Group ("harmony") are married women who, on average, are 39 years old and have six children. Most of them live in polygamous families in Konfon, one of the villages in the rural municipality of Banco, prefecture of Dioïla, region of Koulikoro (second administrative region of Mali). They work with the microfinance institution Soro Yiriwaso to deal more efficiently with their activities when the winter season begins. They grow, among other products, rice and groundnuts. This is their first loan with the institution.
Fatoumata, standing in the middle of the photo, intends to use her loan to buy agricultural supplies and tools and pay for plowing and weeding. She has around 0.5 hectares of farmland to grow rice and groundnuts. The harvested products will be sold at the markets in Klè, Banco and N'Golobougou to a clientele made up of men and women. The group members expect to make an average profit of around 25,000 CFA francs per season.
