The ten members of the group KOTOGNOGONTALA III are married women who average 39 years of age and three children each. They live for the most part in polygamous families in SOGODOGOLA, a district in the Commune of KAI, in the sub-prefecture of LOULOUNI, Prefecture of Kadilo (3rd administrative region of the Republic of Mali). The women are collaborating with the micro-finance institution Soro Yiriwaso to carry out their farm work during the off-season. The group members are on their fourth loan with the institution. The past loans have been properly repaid.
The crop grown is: peanuts. Such is the case with BINTOU, who is sitting second from the right in the photo. With her loan, she intends to pay for plowing and to buy farm inputs and seeds for maintaining: 2 hectare. After the harvest, the produce is sold in villages, at the markets of LOULOUNI and SIKASSO, to a customer base composed of women and men.
BINTOU plans on making an average profit of 165,500 francs CFA per planting. The profits will enable her to repay her loan and also to help her husband with day-to-day expenses.
She would like to keep up this collaboration with Soro Yiriwaso in order to make use of a larger arable plot, so she can derive better gains.
