A loan helped a disabled, queer, Black woman (and repeat Kiva borrower!) attain new skills and grow her business.

Cheryl's story

I am from the South and my family was poor. I was the only girl and the youngest of five kids. My mother was in ill health so I had to take on some of the responsibilities of keeping house. In addition, I was singled out as gifted in third grade and sent to a different school to take advanced classes. It was a balancing act to do well in school and take care of things at home. I eventually went to boarding school and then on to college. While in college, I found the medieval recreation group and started learning different handicrafts including beading. Unfortunately, due to depression and family stress (my mother's health continued to deteriorate), I ultimately dropped out of college.

However, I found comfort in crafting things. Starting around 2014, I've had a number of health challenges and became unable to hold a full-time office job. I started looking at work-from-home alternatives and hit upon the idea of selling some of the jewelry that I made. My partner who also found himself disabled from chronic back pain had started making chainmail. We decided to try to make a business together doing the crafts we enjoy.

After our previous successful Kiva loan where we were able to expand into 3D printing, offer quality materials and increase marketing, we would like to continue upgrading our quality and variety. The local maker shop offers jewelry-making classes and learning to silversmith would allow us to offer some fine jewelry along with our costume collections. Creativity sparked more creativity. We are ready to take the next step.
