Ana is an intelligent and hardworking woman, 20 years old. She lives in the rural area of the department / state of Alta Verapaz in Guatemala. Ana has a small farm where she raises pigs, chickens, and turkeys. To obtain additional income, she also makes beautiful crochet decorations for traditional blouses called “huipiles”. She works per orders with personalized designs. Despite limited resources, she finished sixth grade in school. Ana's partner is a farmer with a small plot growing cardamon. They do not have children.
To expand her business, Ana is requesting her first Kiva loan to buy more animals (pigs, chickens, turkeys) and feed. In the near future, Ana wishes to open a store selling staple goods, because there is high demand in her area.
Seven Q’eqchi’ women who belong to the communal bank “Flor de Cacao” of Puente de Amistad [Friendship Bridge] found an opportunity to develop their agricultural and textile businesses. They sell their products within and outside their community.
The women are part of the Microcrédito “Plus” program that offers loans, education, and health services. During their monthly meetings, they learn about business skills, savings, avoiding over-indebtedness, taking care of their health, and family planning. More than 32,000 women benefit from Puente de Amistad, learning good practices and becoming empowered.
Thank you, Kiva lenders, for giving a helping hand to these women!
