Mujeres Luchadoras De Chiyat Group's story

Traditional wrap skirts called “cortes” have been woven on floor looms for hundreds of years. The Mayan population living in the Western Highlands of Guatemala is proud to wear their traditional and colorful clothing. Ana, twenty-three years old, married and mother of a ten-year-old daughter, joined her husband three years ago by knitting cuts. Weekly they can weave five “cuts” that Ana sells to order and in the local market. He currently does not have enough raw materials, so he applies for his third Kiva loan. She plans to buy high-quality fabrics and threads in bulk. Ana dreams of having her own store to display the clothes.

Ana joined seven other Mayan K'iche women and formed the Puente de la Amistad Trust Bank “Mujeres Luchadoras de Chiyat”. They live in the department/state of Totonicapán and participate in the “Microcrédito Plus” program for loans, education and health. They learn to manage their traditional textile businesses through monthly educational training. Other topics include health, women's issues and family issues, as well as family planning, nutrition and savings. Every two months, they have access to basic healthcare services provided by a traveling nurse.
