The communal bank, Cristo del Consuelo, is comprised of eight cheerful, charismatic women who are entrepreneurs and struggle daily in their respective businesses to improve their household economies. They live in the city of Cuenca which is the third most important one in the country. It has a varied gastronomy, many tourist sites and kind, charismatic people.
Mrs. Zoila Fernández lives in the Cristo Rey area of the city of Cuenca. She is 42 years old, divorced and has four children, ages 22, 20, 18 and 16. Her eldest daughter works and helps cover household expenses. Her second daughter is married and independent. Her third daughter is in school in the city and her youngest son works to cover his own expenses. They live in rental property.
For seventeen years, Doña Zoila has been selling "chuzos" (meat on a stick), from Sunday to Sunday, from 4:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.
This is her 11th loan through the communal bank and she plans to use it to buy ingredients for the chuzos: meat, peppers, onions, potatoes, sausages, etc.
Her dream is to have her own home one day.
