The “Dulce Amistad” (Sweet Friendship) Communal Bank meets every two weeks in the Rocafuerte canton. This place is known for its delicious sweets that the villagers make, which are recognized throughout the entire country. The people there are very warm, kind, and hard-working.
This is the place where we meet María, age 24. She has two children, ages six and five, and they go to school. Her husband is an electromechanical technician. Also, they have a dump truck that they use for transporting rocks.
She has a place in her house where she sells replacement parts and spare parts for cars. She also sells to people who bring their vehicles to her husband to be fixed. She works from Mondays through Saturdays. She buys her products from distributors who come to her place. She tells us that she has been in her business for six years. She likes it because it allows her to earn a living without having to leave her house. This way she can keep up with her children; they need her care.
This loan is to buy electrical replacement parts. She has been in her communal bank during four cycles. She likes it because she has gotten to know people in her bank that are now her best friends.
Her dreams are to have a larger place and to give her children the best.
