Twenty-seven-year-old Aura studied to be a kindergarten teacher but was unable to find work. She is married to a waiter in a restaurant and they have two children (one and five years old).
Two years ago, Aura began selling shoes, jewelry, accessories, personal care and cleaning products, as well as kitchen utensils. One year ago, she began sewing colorful traditional clothing. Aura is planning ahead to end-of-year festivities when demand is high. With her third Kiva loan, she will buy more shoes, jewelry, accessories, personal care and cleaning products, and kitchen utensils. Her goals are to expand her businesses, use new sales strategies and hire employees from her community so that all can prosper.
Aura and six of her friends, who also live in the department/state of Suchitepequez, have formed the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Mujeres Libres”. These women learn to manage their variety stores, pharmacies, screen printing shops and snack, jewelry and kitchen utensil businesses from monthly educational training, part of the “Microcredit Plus” program.
A Facilitator designs an interactive training that covers topics like business, health, nutrition, hygiene and the importance of savings. Recent topics have been about self esteem and what it means to be an effective entrepreneur. Also part of the “Microcredit Plus” program are bi-monthly visits by a nurse, who offers all kinds of basic services like tests, appointments and family planning.
Thank you, Kiva lenders!
